Law Trip to Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey

Ms Trumble took 37 law students to London on Tuesday 27th February 2024. The students started the day by watching various criminal trials at the Central Criminal Court. This is the largest Crown court for the jurisdiction of England & Wales and chiefly presides over indictable offences such as murder and grievous bodily harm.

After a brief stroll down Fleet Street, the students lunched in the legal district -people watching barristers in their wigs and smartly dressed solicitors pulling their trolleys full of documents as they ferried from chambers to court and back.

Post lunch St. Paul’s students toured the Royal Courts of Justice. This is High Court but also has courts for the Court of Appeals both Criminal and Civil Division. There was an exhibition celebrating women in law- the latter have only been ‘allowed’ to be lawyers for the past 100 years. The building has seen cases being tried on behalf of many high-profile claimants: Julian Assange, Prince Harry, Sir Paul Macartney, ‘Wagatha Christie’, and so many more.

We ended the day by strolling through barrister’s chambers down to the Thames, where students took in their last few sites of London before boarding at Blackfriars. It was a sunny day and the views from the platform were breathtaking. We also managed to pop into some legal tailoring shops and even see some horses!

Many students shared a desire to return and see more cases and the chatter on the train was all legal!
