On Friday 7th July, students in Year 10 took part in our first Careers Morning here at St Paul’s.

Students participated in three informative, inspiring, and thought-provoking sessions during the course of the morning:

  • a Careers Fair with representation from thirteen different companies and sectors at both local and national level
  • a session on how to write an effective CV and letter of application supported by resources from one of our advisors at the Careers & Enterprise Company
  • a session on how to think and talk effectively to family and school staff about potential career pathways, supported by a simulation resource from Accenture’s Skills to Succeed Academy

Students had been given time to prepare for the Careers Fair, supported by their tutors, by researching the companies and sectors which were involved in the day from, for example, a local veterinarian surgery to several government departments and the Metropolitan Police.

They had an opportunity to plan and write an ‘Elevator Pitch’ designed to present themselves succinctly and successfully to a prospective employer and took part in interactive activities and challenges provided by the different employers. They had meaningful 1:1 and small group conversations with our visiting employers and came away enthused and informed about the steps that they can take next to pursue career paths of interest to them.

Jared said that ‘the Fair was extremely informative and exceptionally beneficial’ while Suzanna reflected: ‘I found the Careers Morning very useful to get a better insight into careers that I am interested in, and it has encouraged me to start thinking more about what I want to do in the future.’ Edward reflected with gratitude: ‘thank you to all the individuals who volunteered their time to educate us about what opportunities we have’.

We were delighted to hear from our visiting employers, many of whom visit numerous schools and colleges, that our students conducted themselves with maturity and sensitivity and that they were engaged and polite throughout.

They certainly did us proud and we very much look forward to building on the success of this event as we continue to support our students to grow in their understanding of their vocation and how they are being called to put their gifts and talents to good use in the world.
