The Music Department at St. Paul’s are thrilled to have been successful in applying for community funding through the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme. The funding will be used to purchase some additional instruments for the college steel pan band. Throughout July and August, you will be able to vote for St. Paul’s Steel Pan Band in all Tesco stores in Haywards Heath & Burgess Hill (including Tesco Express stores).

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.” Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down the UK to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.”

Depending on the success of voting in store, the Music Department will be awarded a grant for either £1000, £2000 or £4000 towards the purchase of new instruments.

We really hope that students, friends and families of St. Paul’s will be able to collect a token at the checkout and vote for us! The prospect of being able to buy more instruments is incredibly exciting because we know that it will help our steel pan band grow from strength to strength, this will not only have an impact on students within our own college community but our wider community as well.
